Why Spain?
MORE THAN BULLFIGHTS
Usually, when people think of Spain, they think of bullfights, Don Quixote, flamenco dancers, and “la siesta.” Sure, Spain is all this, but there is much more. With a wide range of climates, landscapes, cultures, and even nationalities, Spain is a diverse place.
A SECULAR COUNTRY
Traditionally, Spain has been a predominantly Roman Catholic country. Today, however, it is highly secular. Although about 70% of Spaniards identify as Catholic, only around 3% of the population attends Mass on a typical Sunday. For many, Catholic identity reflects cultural heritage rather than religious belief or practice. Around 20% of Spaniards identify as atheists.
EVANGELICALS A MINORITY
Spain has a few religious minorities. Over a million Muslims now call Spain their home. Many Jehovah’s Witnesses are active in the country. About 47 million people live in Spain, and about 250,000 are Evangelical church members (roughly 0.5% of the population). Spaniards need to hear the gospel.
CHURCH GROWTH
Signs of God’s faithfulness are evident in the Spanish Evangelical community, despite its small size. Many local churches are growing. At the same time, challenges abound. One of the biggest obstacles to healthy local church ministries is a lack of theological education and resources for future leaders. That's why we do what we do!
