Why Spain?

MORE THAN BULLFIGHTS

Usually, when people think of Spain, what comes to mind are bullfights, Don Quixote, flamenco dancers, and “la siesta.” To be sure, Spain is all this, but there is much more. Characterized by a wide range of climates, landscapes, cultures, and even nationalities, Spain is a very diverse place.

ROMAN CATHOLIC

Traditionally, Spain has been a Roman Catholic country. Today, however, it is one of the most secular countries in Europe. While official statistics show that 70% of Spaniards are nominally Catholic, only about 3% of the population attends mass on any given Sunday. Most Spaniards are agnostic, and some 20% of Spaniards declare themselves to be atheists.

OTHER RELIGIONS

There are a few religious minorities in Spain. Over a million Muslims now call Spain their home. There are many active Jehovah’s Witnesses in the country. Approximately 47 million people live in Spain, about 250,000 of whom are Evangelical church members (roughly 0.5% of the population). Spaniards need to hear the gospel.

CHURCH GROWTH

Signs of God’s faithfulness are evident the Spanish Evangelical community, in spite of its small size. Many local churches are currently experiencing growth. At the same time, challenges abound. One of the biggest obstacles to healthy local church ministries is a lack of theological education and resources for future leaders. That's why we do what we do!
